We don’t usually cover beauty here on #RueDaily, so when we do, you KNOW it’s gotta be good. We mentioned a few weeks ago that Kristin Ess, hair genius, had launched her own line of haircare products with Target. Now that we’ve had the opportunity to actually try the products, we can’t keep the secret to ourselves.

Quick backstory: Kristin Ess is the definition of a self-made success story. We interviewed her a few years ago and still find her approach to be totally empowering. (Read the full story here.) She’s a stylist to the stars, co-founder of The Beauty Department, and — we’ll say it — the gal responsible for some of the biggest trends in hair today. (Remember that lob everyone had a few years ago?)

The products themselves are top quality. It’s essentially a luxury product at an attainable price, which is perfect for us champagne-girls-on-beer-budgets. Each product is formulated with Zip-Up Technology™, a strengthening complex, that’s designed to ‘zip up’ split ends and smooth the appearance of damaged cuticles while helping to protect hair from environmental stressors and color fade. They’re all cruelty-free, and the shampoos and conditioners are sulfate free, color safe, and keratin treatment safe.

The collection includes everything you’d need to recreate the looks spotted on Kristin’s Instagram, except Kristin herself. Don’t fret though — her website has tutorials explaining how you can use the products best.

So our review after a week of using the line? The shampoo and conditioner gives hair lots of shine and smells amazing. The thickening spray lifts roots which means lots of bounce (and a more professional looking blow out). The pomade took our second-day side braid from feeling like a rush job to looking very intentional and professional. The beach wave spray made air-dried hair look as if it had been carefully heat styled and gave a soft shine. (For perspective, other wave sprays can leave hair feeling REALLY crunchy.) Basically, it’s the best the ol’ mop has looked in awhile.

So, long story short, we love it. Start the slideshow for a look at some of the prettiest hair ever, and then shop our favorites. You’ll thank us — and Kristin — later.
