Our entire team adores Artists & Fleas — the hugely popular marketplace with locations in Williamsburg, Chelsea Market, downtown Los Angeles, and Venice Beach. The market, which has an impressive group of vintage clothing vendors and indie designers, has become the place to find the next big thing. And honestly, our favorite part is that it offers a platform for small businesses and independent makers to grow their audience, bringing new meaning to the idea of shopping locally.
Founded by Amy Abrams and her husband Ronen in 2003, the Artists & Fleas receives over 10,000 visitors each weekend at a single location — and they’re setting up shop in SoHo on May 13. Whew! We had to know how Amy makes it all happen, so we’re taking #5MinutesWith the mover-and-shaker to learn more:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
A few years ago one of my childhood friends named Sara who lives in San Francisco came to visit me at Artists & Fleas for the first time. She smiled and shared her thoughtful observation about our business. She said something to the effect of, “So you basically created a business combining all of the things you love under one roof — your love of travel, visiting far-flung marketplaces around the world, vintage clothing, shopping, finding beautiful handmade items, creating community, facilitating entrepreneurship, and sharing cool things you discover. It was a true lightbulb moment for me.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I give my husband a kiss, I get a snuggle with my daughters and my dog, drink a strong cup of coffee. Repeat.
Being happy where you are. To create a life where you love your work, you get to spend the majority of your working hours energized by doing work that you do best, building an awesome team that love their jobs, knowing that your work has an impact on others. And in my case, getting to work with my husband.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
You will rarely see me without my ray ban aviator sunglasses (which I have been wearing since I was 16 thanks to the movie Top Gun), two necklaces (one for each of my daughters), my phone (ugh), and well groomed eyebrows.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
To have Artists & Fleas pop up marketplaces in Barney’s stores across the country.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN BROOKLYN:
Closest: Our house in Upstate NY — instant relaxation.
Favorite place in the world to travel: India — instant inspiration.
Home away from home: Israel
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I go for a run, walk around NYC, travel.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
To invest in a CRM (customer relationship manager) and to have a better system to capture data.
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Running Artists & Fleas while living abroad with my family for a year.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
We are all a work in progress.
