Our favorite pastime? Poring over any and all design inspiration that we can get our hands on. So it (obviously) won’t come as a surprise that Remodelista is at the top of our bookmarks folder. We love perusing the site for inspiration & ideas, and know we can turn to the trusted source if we ever need to find an expert for our own home projects. We just had to chat with the Editor in Chief, Julie Carlson. She’s got a career that began at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York as well as The New Yorker. She’d eventually become the founding editor of Remodelista, and we couldn’t be more grateful. We took 5 Minutes to find out what drives her daily routine:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
After completing my second remodel, I thought, “There has to be a better way.” It was the early days of the internet, and there were only a handful of design blogs. We started with a simple premise: to narrow the choices for fellow remodelers and to share our own experiences.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I have a strong cappuccino made on our Livia Pasquini espresso machine.
For me, it’s having someone tell me that Remodelista saved their life during their remodel.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
My MacBook Air (unfortunately).
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN MILL VALLEY:
I lived in Primrose Hill, in North London, for a year. I’d move back in a second; I loved the architecture, the pubs, the proximity to Regent’s Park.
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I have another cappuccino.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Be an early adopter when it comes to social media; I was slow to “get” Pinterest, for instance.
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Working on our third Remodelista book and photographing and writing about Ellen DeGeneres’ overhaul of the Brody House in LA.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
We’re fanatics at Remodelista about staying true to our vision: “Buy better, buy less. Keep it simple. Live with what you love.” Whenever we’re on the fence about a product or a project, we ask ourselves, “Would we buy this or would we live here?” If the answer is no, we move on.
