We are big fans of top Los Angeles stylist, Catherine Sheppard of The Life Styled, so we couldn’t have been more excited (or ready to shop!) when she offered to share her go-to look for winter with Rue. Mixing equal parts comfortable and chic, Catherine braves the season’s chill and looks effortless while doing so with a basic black coat, patterned scarf, and chunky ankle boots. We sat down with Catherine to snag her style tips just for you, and completely fell in love with her sartorial point of view in the process.
How would you describe your personal style?
Modern, edgy, and glamorous… and from time to time I like to be a little bit playful. Anything black, leather, pointy, or sparkly is a necessity in my book. But these days I’ve been trying to watch out for those quick fix purchases and instead save for the timeless ones.
Has it changed at all over the years?
Yes! It’s done a complete 360 over the years. I can’t even vouch for anything I wore before the age of about 20. At the time, I was living in New York and surrounded by amazing fashion but was still dabbling in earthier looks and didn’t quite have a handle on it. Each year since then I’ve learned something new about what defines my style. I eventually determined which stores I shouldn’t set foot in and which ones are quintessentially me.
What is your go-to look?
My go-to look always involves either my black leather jacket or leather sleeved blazer, an edgy shoe, and a plain gray tee on casual days or something dripping in sequins for an evening out.
What tip could you share with us on achieving great style?
Only wear clothes that give you that extra spring in your step. Don’t even give a moment’s thought to anything that doesn’t make you utterly giddy – both in the way it fits and the style itself. You know that feeling you get in the dressing room when something is just right – don’t buy it unless you get that feeling! If you don’t, it’s doomed to sit in your closet and collect dust.
Excellent advice! Favorite online hidden gem to shop from?
I have to admit I’m a sucker for good return policies and free shipping, so my go-to’s are Shopbop, Nordstrom, Zappos, and Net-a-Porter (not exactly hidden). But I’m also a fan of Etsy for vintage finds like an amazing bar cart or a hand knit scarf, and Ebay for a designer piece I can’t stop thinking about that’s no longer in stores.
