With 4 kids under the age of 6, Ashley Clark’s latest clients had a big project on their hands: a new home and not a lot of time to make it aesthetically their own. Luckily, they had one of Orange County’s top designers (and owner of the boho-chic shop Skout) there to work her magic — both renovating the space and bringing their vision to life.

When the family purchased the house, it was much different — the entire space felt dated and was filled with lots of dark woods. Though nothing was structurally changed during the renovation, Ashley and her team spent about 45 days updating every single surface in the home. Downstairs, white paint and light wood floors brightened everything up. The kitchen still has the original cabinets, minus the upper ones, which were replaced with open shelving. New countertops gave the space a fresh look, while sleek hardware was the perfect finishing touch.

In the kitchen window, sleek banquette seating is the perfect solution for a large family. “We covered it in white vinyl, which makes it easy to wipe up spills and messes, and kept our color palette pretty clean and fresh so it would be easy to maintain,” Ashley explains.

In the family room, easy entertaining was at top of mind during the design process. “We made a giant sectional large enough for all family and friends — then slip covered it in a slate colored linen that can be machine washed, just in case. And the pillows on the family room couch are all from my Skout line!”

The dining room and living room are more “adult spaces,” Ashley says, but still are family-friendly. In the family room, a playful sofa — upholstered in a mini-animal print — sits at the ready for impromptu piano recitals. This room has a lot of beautiful details, such as the lucite and gold coffee tables and a pale blue leather chair. The built-in shelving — another element in the home that received a coat of glossy white paint — hosts a collection of colorful accessories.

In the dining room, a custom table (a white concrete top with a wooden base) sits atop a bold bohemian rug, and offers plenty of seating — including gorgeous wicker canopy chairs at the head. This room is Ashley’s favorite. With a smile, she says “I really love how the entire space came together and really is so them.”
