When D2Interieurs started renovating this young family’s home, the Modern Classic Nantucket Shingle Style home was elegant but dated. On the upside, the home had plenty to work with; set on two private acres, the serene wooded setting includes manicured lawns, perennial flowerbeds, stone pathways and rock gardens. All bedrooms are en suite, there are four fireplaces, and French doors open to porches, decks and patios from every room. The goal, according to D2’s founder Denise Davies, was “to take this traditional looking home and create a modern and open floor plan so that the house had a better flow. The home had to appeal to their modern aesthetic but also be comfortable and function for their two young boys.” So D2 took down walls and completely renovated the home.

Eschewing nautical themes, the design team focused on creating a modern home for the young family moving from the Upper West Side of NYC to Irvington, NY. “We started with a totally clean slate. Everything in the home is new which was so much fun and allowed us to be so creative with texture and color!” Nantucket’s favorite color, blue, does make many appearances throughout the home, as do neutrals and subtle coral contrasts.

In the kitchen, Denise selected gorgeous textured wood cabinets in a gray wash and Macauba stone countertops. A feature wall was created using a commercial range with a custom boxed hood overhead and floating shelves flanking each side. The opposite side of the kitchen is open to the family room and dining room, providing a huge space for entertaining or family time that would have been impossible in the client’s former home. Denise recalls, “When we installed this house, the clients were still living in NYC. They entered into a fully designed and accessorized home and they were literally crying and saying ‘I can’t believe you made our dreams come true!’”
