Claire Marie Zinnecker has an inherent eye for great style. At her eponymous interior design group, she uses her trademark aesthetic to create spaces filled with clean, affordable design – and more importantly, spaces that tell a story.

When Claire found out she’d be taking a trip to Morocco with Maison de l’Artisan to experience the culture, artisans and products of the country – she wasted no time planning the journey. With fellow Austinite (and very talented photographer) Molly Winters by her side, she ventured to the Riad El Fenn – a beautiful boutique hotel located in the heart of Marrakesh. With Molly’s stunning photographs and Claire’s vivid description, we feel like we were right by their side…

“You would never think the dark quiet alley that leads to Riad El Fenn would have such a jewel hidden within it. The unassuming stone path is tucked just off a busy city street. Once you enter El Fenn’s colorful lobby the noise of the city is silenced and you are instantly transported into another world. It is hard to capture the wonder of this Marrakesh retreat with words. Originally a private riad, which is a Moroccan house with an interior courtyard, El Fenn was converted into a six room hotel in 2004 by Vanessa Branson and Howell James, who used local craftsmen to help restore this great home. They respected the history of the building while also adding a bold modern twist using colors, textures and materials to give El Fenn its vibrant character. After later expansion, the hotel now boasts three swimming pools, a rooftop restaurant, a lounge/bar, a spa, a library, and 28 unique rooms and suites, each nestled within courtyards, terraces, and gardens rich with vegetation. Many of the original materials were restored and renovated and the rooms are decorated with one of a kind furniture pieces to give El Fenn its breathtaking interior. Entering each new space is a visual adventure and visitors are invited to relax in its tranquil atmosphere. Though it’s difficult to leave this intoxicating oasis, the hotel is within walking distance to the Djemaa el Fna Square and other must see sites.”
